First-Year Students Live On Campus

The University of Idaho requires all full-time, first year students under 21 years of age to live in organized living groups officially recognized by the university (residence halls, fraternities and sororities) for one academic year.

This policy is predicated on the belief and substantiated by research that students who reside on campus prosper in an integrated living and learning environment. U of I is committed to the well-being, health, safety and educational pursuits of all our students. Students benefit from the interaction with one another as well as the academic and social support services offered by our residential education programs and staff.

Exemptions will be considered when a student demonstrates to the Office of the Dean of Students that:

  • The student is 21 years of age or older.
  • The student has attended an institution of higher education as a regularly enrolled student for at least two regular semesters or three regular quarters, post high school graduation, excluding summer sessions.
  • The student is living with immediate family in a family situation (i.e. mother and/or father, legal guardian; aunt or uncle; or grandparents) within a 40-mile radius of the University of Idaho.
  • The student has a legal dependent that is living with the student.
  • The student is married.
  • The student has a medical or psychological disability documented by a licensed medical or mental health professional where living in recognized student housing would have detrimental effects on the student’s physical health and/or emotional well-being.
